👩🚒My professional communications journey started in a Fire Station. At 17, I became a volunteer firefighter and continued for several years.I learned a lot about leadership, fire science, and public safety. However, there were multiple "soft skills" that I also learned, which carried over to my communications work later... 1. How to communicate with people from all walks of life. As a first responder, you have a lot of different audiences to address. People from all backgrounds will cross your path. You are the one who is responsible for their care. Choose your words, tone, and delivery wisely. 2. Be descriptive but concise. The first fire department officer who arrives to a fire must deliver an initial radio report describing the events unfolding. Those reports have to be descriptive for the people still on the way to the scene, but they also have to be brief as time is of the essence! This taught me to keep my writing tight.3. Be Direct. Most firefighters I know are pretty blunt when it comes to conversation. As a sensitive person, this could be very intimidating. However, I quickly learned that it was necessary when the stakes were high and action had to happen. Share in the comments below your unique communications experience!

Love this piece from Nicole Kirby, APR on crisis communications. "Your school communication professional will tell you that you are much better off being the first to tell your story rather than letting someone else tell it for you." https://lnkd.in/gFgPQaxh #schoolpr #crisiscomms

For us, policy communications is all about people, relationships and (micro-) communities–and that policy experiences create the space to connect those dots. We’re keen to share what we’ve learned to help other ambitious policy communicators get their experiential neurons firing. So how do we do this? We 've put together a -first - Policy Experience Day: a free hands-on workshop that will teach you a methodology to go from problem to idea to buildable policy experience. We welcome all policy communicators of any seniority who want to add another layer of strategic thinking to their toolkit. To create as much opportunity for as many people as possible, we ask that maximum two people from the same organisation attend. When reaching out to studio@bump.nu or via DM to one of the Bump team member to book your spot, please mention you preference for the am or pm session, each of which lasts about three hours.
