Amid the most dangerous national and global security environment in decades, are the Pentagon and Aerospace + Defense companies finally making headway in accelerating innovation through shepherding startups from ideation to product? It does appear after a decade plus of talk, there is finally some action, in the form of the pioneering work of Doug Beck, a former Apple exec + Navy veteran with service in Iraq+ Afghanistan, who heads the Defense Innovation Unit, in place since 2015.This could be a boost for attracting new talent into A&D as startups offer a different mix of career, skills, experience and financial rewards than core Defense Primes have for years. The focus on startups and new technologies is part of a broader strategy toreduce the ‘Valley of Death’—the gap between promising new technologies and their successful integration into defense platforms. This approach aims to streamline the transition from unproven technologies to operational capabilities, ensuring that the Pentagon can keep pace with rapid technological changes.Embracing innovation from non-traditional sources and fostering partnerships with startups is seen as a key step inmodernizing defense capabilitiesand maintaining a competitive edge in the global defense landscape. These efforts reflect a significant shift in the Pentagon’s approach to innovation, talent acquisition, and technology integration, with the potential to reshape the Aerospace + Defense sector profoundly. Then again, there's so far to go and so much more work to do (see the graphic about being stuck in pilot phases), who knows if it will be enough to rebuild the military and reduce the danger to America and its allies from massive failures in defense procurement, strategy + management going back decades?#defensespending #aerospacedefense #aerospace

If you're a father or a soon to be father, never forget this.My oldest is 6 and I wince at every memory I have (and there are many) of waiving off a request to play, especially during 2020 (IFYKYK) when I was a full-time worker + full-time home daycare provider. I'm trying to make that right now and not make the same mistake so often with my 2 year old.Bark like a seal, play with that doll, crawl around on all fours, stay up past bed time once in a while, etc.You can't + won't regret it. #fathersday

2.8 million Americans have schizophrenia, including a significant % of our homeless and those in a local jail, lanquishing without effective treatment systems and less effective pharmaceutical treatments. It can be debilitating, expensive, and socially stigmatizing in effects that degrade quality of life and life outcomes, including participation in the labor market. But by late 2024, we will know if Clinical Research + Pharmaceutical professionals will have achieved yet another breakthrough with a drug, KarXT, that has shown impressive results in late-stage Clinical Trials. If KarXT, developed by Bristol Myers Squibb, is approved by the FDA in late 2024, yet another proverbial 'game-changer' will be available to help this long-struggling and suffering population.#clinicalresearch#clinicaltrials#biopharma#stem

In an uncertain economic environment, reduced promotions reflect a larger % of companies expanding headcounts more cautiously. Promotions aren't guarantees for success either- middle managers are a growing share of layoffs and some companies have struggled to train managers effectively, leading to worse performance and morale. So as many employers chose to 'batten down the hatches' via hiring freezes, slower growth or even outright attrition via layoffs, RTO, and consolidation of departments and teams, they're possibly impacting the growth of the next cohort of leaders even as they often ask new managers to do too much too fast with too little resources. For entry-level workers as well as workers who joined after quitting another job for a perceived upgrade, the delay in promotions also reduces growth opportunities, at least in the short term. Those seeking managerial or leadership experience but who can't win the role will need mentors and careful consideration of next best steps more than ever to ensure they don't let frustration further slow their career development.

America needs to rescue the 8 American hostages the terrorist group Hamas has held in violent, depraved captivity since October 7th, the day of nightmarish slaughter by Hamas of 1,189 people and the vile kidnapping of hundreds of civilians.I bring this up because today's daring daytime rescue by Israeli forces of 4 Israeli hostages in a heavily armed Hamas controlled neighborhood where they’d deliberately -hid weapons, -embedded armed fighters + -hostages against international laws of war is sadly overshadowed by the reality that 95 hostages remain- including 2 babies, the very elderly, and young civilians.8 months have passed in which America is still negotiating with terrorists who reject increasingly desperate offers from Israel to end the war Hamas started by releasing all hostages. Hamas, who promise again and again to repeat the horrors of October 7, sees the hostages as the ultimate human shield, the most cruel weapon Hamas uses in a long legacy of barbarity against the Palestinian people and the Israelis. All of the suffering and death and horror that has unfolded since October 7th could have been avoided had Hamas not started the war with such wanton rape, murder, and hostage-taking of civilians. And more could be avoided if they just released the hostages.Hamas still holds 8 Americans, and it is well past time we bring them home.Their names are:Edan AlexanderItay ChenSagui Dekel-ChenHersh Goldberg-PolinGadi HaggaiJudith Weinstein Haggai Omer NeutraKeith Siegel

Two huge moments in the labor market to discuss today. ⭐Demographically-adjusted, we're at what economists used to consider 'full employment'. We can do better so no Mission Accomplished banners but everyone should breathe for a moment and recognize this job market is *working* for a higher % of our prime-age workforce at once, challenges with inflation + workload + morale aside, than it has in 20+ years.👀Native-born workers have above historic employment-population ratio levels (going back to the Great Recession in 2008)- that's not a sign of weakness despite what some people may unreasonably claim. Both of these are courtesy of labor economist Ernie Tedeschi, who is back on social media after he completed his service to America. He posted these exceptional graphics today. Now let's play 3 truths and a lie about May's jobs report.1️⃣ It is harder to find a job if you’re out of work as long-term unemployment (unemployed 27 weeks or longer) is up 20% YoY2️⃣ Healthcare job growth is averaging 30% of total job growth in the last 12 months3️⃣ It is normal for a stall in year-over-year improvement in the Prime-Age (25-54) employment ratio to happen without a recession occuring4️⃣ The private sector industry job diffusion index increased to 63% (job market expansion >= 50)#jobsreport #labormarket #economy #jobmarket #unemployment #recessionwatch

80 years ago on June 6th, 1944, facing impossible odds, Allied combat forces from America to the Free Polish rescued our world from the brink of total disaster. They launched the D-Day invasion against Nazi Germany’s strongholds along the French coastline. The seas were tumultuous, the Nazi fire relentless. Thousands of soldiers fell, their lives extinguished in the blink of an eye. The mission was on the verge of failure, especially at Utah Beach, one of the five Nazi beachheads targeted that day.Yet the men of D-Day miraculously prevailed. Some barely escaped the landing boats under heavy fire. Some met their end in agony on the beaches. Some were fathers, others would miraculously live to become so.Some fought for the Double V - victory against fascism abroad, victory against oppression at home - even as their constitutional freedoms were denied due to the color of their skin. Some found themselves fighting against their own German kin, a poignant reflection of America’s immigrant history and Germany being one of the 2 largest sources of immigrants for a century until the war.All in all, they came from all walks of life. Farmers from tiny rural towns. City kids hardened by the harsh realities of places like Hell’s Kitchen, NYC.They had endured the harshest economic depression the world had ever seen, with unemployment rates soaring to a staggering 25%. Many were battle-hardened, uncertain of when, or even if, they would ever return home. They did this while entire continents were in ruins, with tens of millions of dead and countless more refugees and prisoners. East and Southeast Asia and much of Europe bore the scars of the monstrous reign of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. It seemed, during the darkest hours of World War II, that these grotesque distortions of humanity might triumph, reshaping the world in their horrific image*.D-Day truly changed all that, shattering the sense of fatalism and hopelessness that far too many held.Today’s world, with its abundant opportunities for freedom, prosperity, and peace, is a testament to the sacrifices made by the men of D-Day and those who supported them.Farmers who fed the war effort. Factory workers who built bombs and aircraft. Women who stepped up to fill the void in factories left by the men who went overseas to fight. Women who watched those women’s infants and toddlers. In an era where the term ‘hero’ is often diluted by overuse, the men of D-Day stand as a stark reminder of what true heroism entails. Their bravery, their sacrifice, their determination, saved the world. As we remember them, 80 years on, let us hope that history never again demands such suicidal courage from so few to safeguard the freedom of so many. *Indeed, less than a year later, even some battle-hardened Allied soldiers would lose their composure, a few even their senses, as they uncovered the horrors of and liberated the few survivors of Nazi concentration camps like Dachau.

The available data we have for layoffs is not matching the overwhelmingly negative drumbeat from media and LinkedIn.Tragic as layoffs are for individuals who are experiencing them and struggling to find new white-collar work in a slower hiring environment, they are not intensifying or accelerating. If recent coverage of less discussion on S&P 500 earnings call transcripts of planned layoffs is accurate, it is possible there could be fewer layoffs by larger companies through Q3.

Why don't more people in the working prime of their lives (ages 25-54) work? The Federal Reserve's Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking has measured the economic well-being of U.S. households for 11 years with a sample size in late 2023 of more than 11,000 adults. This is an ideal source for insights on this. The most frequently mentioned reasons? Disability, health issues limiting work, family or personal obligations excluding childcare, childcare requirements and inability to find work.Everyone of these is surmountable with flexibility, effort + planning by employers and their partners in government. If our prime age employment to population ratio would rise just 1% (from 80.8% in April 2024 to 81.8%) over the next 2-3 years, it would mean another 1.28 million Americans at work with opportunities for everything from 401K matches to PTO to health insurance to career advancement.Already the advent of flex work options (Hybrid, remote) has boosted the fortunes of those with a disability and working mothers, a group that traditionally has seen lower participation in the labor market than others, often not by choice. There are plenty more reforms and experiments worth trying to boost the ranks of prime-age workers.
